Car
I
looked into renting a car for 21 days for use throughout Argentina. Many of the
options for car rentals within Buenos Aires happened to be manual, which is not
an issue for me, but is an important detail to think about before traveling. I
found a car for a total of $467 for the three-week period, with the same pick-up
and drop-off spot near an airport. Like with many countries, you must be 21
years old to rent and have a valid license.
Train / Bus / Air
My mass transit options
are typically only available in larger cities. When in Buenos Aries a SUBE card
can be used for transport on the buses and subways. These cards cost 90 Argentina
pesos (about 1.41 US dollars). They can be refilled at stations throughout the
city. I will figure about 4 US dollars for travel by bus and subway. For
cross-country travel buses are also an option. In the Lonely Planet Argentina (Travel
Guide), the authors describe the types of buses, as well as mentioning that
many Argentines use buses to get around.
Other options
In larger cities, specifically
Buenos Aries, bicycles are often a viable option for cheap transportation. Bicycles
are offered at points through the city, but be warned, they are sometimes
difficult to come by. Hitchhiking is also mentioned by Lonely Planet guides,
but only recommended for backpackers.
Estimate of total ground travel expenses
The total cost of
traveling within Argentina for a three-week period is about $350 US dollars.
